Berenberg Polo Derby 2010
4th -6th June 2010
High Goal polo tournament
at the Hamburger Polo Club

Berenberg Polo-Derby remains a first-class event.

It can almost be described as a tradition, when, at the beginning of the season, Germany’s oldest bank, the Berenberg Bank, founded in 1590, extends its invitation to the Berenberg Polo-Derby in Klein Flottbek, Hamburg. This tournament, which showcases play of the highest level, the High Goal, is indeed taking place again this year.

The German polo elite gathers, supported by a few, usually Argentinian, professionals and fights for a silver trophy which was donated over one hundred years ago. The audiences will experience an exciting sport and enthralling scenes of play, as well as exclusivity and a familiar atmosphere. It is not just the audiences and players who look forward to the start of the new season with great anticipation. The horses and grooms, too, live in anticipation of seeing the polo ball fly across the grass and watching 32 hooves thunder across the ground once again. The audiences also get involved when they are asked to participate in the famous “divot stamping”, treading in the pieces of grass which were torn out by the hooves and mallets, in the breaks.

Many guests bring their children, dogs are allowed to run around freely, some guests sit on rugs and have picnics by the edge of the playing field. The atmosphere is thus somewhat British, which appeals to Hamburg’s residents. Perhaps this is why Hamburg is described as Germany’s most important centre for polo.

The games take place on Friday, Saturday and Sunday from 13:30 until 17:30 on the grounds of the Hamburger Polo Club, Jenischstraße 26, in Klein Flottbek.
