Berenberg Polo Derby 2009

at the Hamburger Polo Club

This is the first big polo tournament of the season, which is being played as a High Goal – the highest possible level of play- tournament for the first time this year. It takes place on the Hamburger Polo Club grounds in Klein Flottbek. Germany’s oldest bank, the Berenberg Bank which was founded in 1590, extends its invitation to the polo derby which carries the same name. This is when the polo elite, supported by a few, usually Argentinean, professionals, meets and fights for the donated silver trophy. A great number of fans of this noble sport is expected to arrive and enjoy the exciting occurrence on the field, the mixture of exclusivity and familiar atmosphere on the weekend of the final on 13th / 14th June 2009. The guests bring their children, dogs are allowed to run around freely and some guests sit on rugs and have picnics. It’s almost a British setting, which appeals to Hamburg’s residents. Perhaps this is also the reason for why Hamburg is described as Germany’s most important centre for polo.
